Dear Ms. Robin,
You probably don't remember me, but my name is Rudy and I was rescued from the Memphis Animal Shelter on January 13, 2004 by SmallPaws Rescue. I just celebrated my first birthday with my new mom.....well, she was my foster mom but she failed fostering 101! I just wanted to say thank you to all the nice folks at SmallPaws. You saved my life. And wow is my life ever better now! I have a nice warm bed to sleep in......mom even shares her pillow with me. And I get lots and lots of good food to eat. Especially when I go to grandmommy's house.....man can she ever cook! She fixes me chicken all the time!!! Oh and she made me a birthday cake too! I have gained 10 lbs! This past year has been the greatest....well, except for the fact that mom made me go to school. But I was the star and passed with flying colors. Mom says I didn't learn a darn thing, but hey I've got the diploma to prove it! I have a brother and sister to play with and of course lots of toys! Mom even bought me a convertible! Can you believe it?! Of course, she says it's just her midlife crisis, but I know she really bought it for me! Well, I just wanted to let you know how great I am doing thanks to SmallPaws. You gave me a chance when no one else would.

Rudy (and momma Jan thanks you too!)

Yesterday, when my husband went to the shelter, they would not let him adopt the bichon because it was closing time but said they would not put him down until Tuesday. Jan Weatherred (another SPR volunteer) and I met at the shelter this morning before they opened so we could hopefully adopt this very sad looking and in very bad shape little guy, (probably a Bichon-poodle mix...he weighs about 25 pounds) who Jan named Rudy. Their policy is that you adopt the animal and then leave it there so it can be fixed. The shelter let me adopt Rudy without first neutering him which was very nice. Rudy got his shots and tested heartworm negative...yahoo!!! I took Rudy to our vet who immediately checked him out. That drive was so long because poor Rudy really smelled from all the infection in his body. (People probably wondered why I had my head stuck out of the window while I was driving) Dr. Hendricks was very concerned about a possible broken leg, several deep puncture neck wounds which were badly infected, and Rudy was very flea infested and so matted. This afternoon, they shaved Rudy, took xrays of his leg and IT IS NOT BROKEN:)), cleaned out the horribly infected deep holes in his neck which they believe are bite wounds and put drains in them, and treated Rudy with antibiotics. Dr. Hendricks thinks that Rudy can go home soon which is fantastic news.

Little Rudy had to be in so much pain but is friendly, never barked, cried out in pain or growled when people were looking at his wounds. He even wagged his tail for Jan and I and snuggled against Jan while she was holding him. We both looked into Rudy's eyes and now we are soooo in love with this little Rudy. He is a survivor and is so lucky to be alive. He was on death row and was on the "to be euthanized list yesterday and today". Thank you Small Paws Rescue for saving his life.

Rudy is doing so well!!!!!! I just called the vet office and they said that Rudy is a different dog. They took him outside and his head was up, his tail wagged, he went to the bathroom and ate a good breakfast once they gave him some yummy soft food. He is still limping but when the tech looked at his foot again, they saw another puncture wound so Dr. Hendricks will check on it. Poor baby!!! Right now, they are giving him a good bath since they didn't want to yesterday because of the shape that he was in. They said he is white!!! he was yellow, black, dark red and every other color yesterday.

They said he is just the sweetest little fluff. I'll go over there later today and take a picture and see him.

After all I went through with Saphire, you just don't know how relieved I am. Well, yes I do know cuz you went through it with me!!!

Here are some pics of Rudy. The neck pic (the last pic) is graphic so don't look if you have a weak stomach.

One year old "Rudy", waiting to be "sprung."

Please keep the prayers coming for Rudy.

I went to see little Rudy this afternoon. They brought him into the room and I wouldn't have recognized him except for the puncture wounds. Rudy is so sad looking and you can tell that he doesn't feel good at all but the techs say that he is doing so much better. They still have the drain in the neck...yuk, it sounds like his breathing is flowing through it. He has puncture wounds on his ears, legs, neck and body. The problem with his leg was that he had a bad puncture wound right at his elbow which the vet will be treating.

The good news is that he is going to be okay and will heal! Everyone at the vet office has fallen in love with Rudy and are taking such great care of him:))

Here are a couple of after haircut pictures.

Thanks for all your prayers!!! They are working!

Memphis, Tennessee Lyrics

(Chuck Berry)

Long distance information
Give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find the party
Tryin' to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number
But I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took the message
And he wrote it on the wall

Help me information
Get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd phone for me here
From Memphis, Tennessee
Her home is on the south side
High up on a ridge
Just a half a mile
From the Mississippi bridge

Help me information
More than that I can not add
Only that I miss her
And all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart
Because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home
In Memphis, Tennessee

Last time I saw Marie
She was wavin' me goodbye
With hurry-home drops on her cheek
That trickled from her eye
Well Marie is only six years old
Information please
Try to put me through to her
In Memphis, Tennessee

So long distance information
Give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find the party
Tryin' to get in touch with me
Well Marie is only six years old
Information please
Try to put me through to her
In Memphis, Tennessee
